We all know walking is good for us… it’s energising, it’s mood-enhancing, it’s fitness-building!
I go on about it all the time.
But did you know that walking early in the morning has its own unique benefits?
Namely exposure to natural light.
I’ve just finished listening to a podcast episode with Michael Mosley where he explores this exact thing.
Exposure to natural light within an hour or two of waking up helps entrain our circadian rhythm (biological clock) to the rise and fall of the sun. Before the arrival of the electric light bulb this is exactly how our ancestors would have lived for thousands of years.
By using early morning sunlight to reestablish our natural circadian rhythm we can feel more awake and alert in the morning. And more relaxed and sleepy by the evening.
Energising exercise, improved fitness and a better night’s rest.
Now that’s a habit worth trying!
