Call me a killjoy but every time I hear the words...
“I stopped strength training because I didn't enjoy it”
I cry a bit inside.
It’s like saying “I don't bother brushing my teeth... it's too dull”
That would be crazy right?
Effective strength training is all about mastering the mundane: safe exercises, hard work, small wins, consistency, patience.
It’s hard to package and sell this stuff. It’s boring.
Yet…
Despite all the boringness, it's these mundane habits, repeated enough times, which drive the biggest strength training breakthroughs!
So I guess my point is this:
Not all exercise has to be entertaining.
Sometimes the benefits come later.
Much like brushing your teeth :-)
p.s. If you happen to really enjoy your strength workouts, that is awesome. Genuinely. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. Personally I get a lot of satisfaction from trying to beat my previous workouts scores. I'm just saying the two don’t have to overlap!
