Maximising your strength : weight ratio.
Any method of progressive strength training plus calorie reduction will help push you towards this goal. However, for me two exercises really stand out:
Push Ups and Pull Ups.
The royalty of bodyweight exercises.
The reason why these two moves are so applicable in this particular scenario is because any improvement in your strength : weight ratio (more strength, less weight or both) will see performance in both exercises skyrocket.
Making them great markers of progress and, quite possibly, longevity too!
