This is a tricky question to answer.
I’ve been told the body burns approximately 6 calories per minute doing bodyweight resistance training but this will be highly variable depending on how much you weigh, exercise intensity and the amount of muscle groups recruited per exercise.
Also bear in mind most bodyweight resistance workouts usually involve plenty of rest periods where this number will will drop off considerably.
One plus point…
Bodyweight resistance training helps build muscle which will positively impact your resting metabolic rate. In other words, post workout you will likely benefit from a small boost in the number of calories you burn throughout the rest of the day. Probably not the huge increase some marketers would like you to believe… but it all helps!
All that said, does the amount of calories you burn doing bodyweight resistance training really matter?
Focusing on calorie expenditure is such a depressing way to approach exercise. Much better to focus on the positive stuff which exercise, particularly resistance exercise, is actually really good for:
Building lean muscle and improving body shape
Enhancing muscular strength and cardiovascular fitness
Fortifying bones and connective tissues
Improving energy, vitality and longevity
Boosting brain health, mood and thinking
Prioritising fat loss over muscle loss (when cutting weight)
This mindset liberates you from the idea bodyweight workouts have to be long and burn loads of calories to be effective.
They don’t.
First and foremost exercise to get fit and strong.
