8 Simple Ways to Use Your Environment to Stay Active and Fit

We all know staying active and fit is important for our overall health and well-being. However, for many of us it can be difficult to find the time and motivation to exercise regularly. Fortunately, there are simple ways to use your environment to stay active and fit without the need for a gym membership, hours of free time or expensive equipment. Here are 8 ways to get moving and stay fit using your surroundings.

Take The Stairs

If you work in an office building or live in a multi-story building, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Climbing stairs is a great cardiovascular exercise that strengthens your legs and improves your balance.

Walk (Or Bike) To Work

If you live close to your workplace, consider walking or biking instead of driving or taking public transportation. Saves you money and provides a great opportunity for exercise.

Use A Standing Desk

If you work at a desk all day, consider using a standing desk. At least for some of the day. Regular standing will burn more calories, activate more muscles, improve posture and reduce the negative impacts of prolonged sitting.

Take A Walk During Breaks

If you have a break at work or during the day, take a quick walk around the block. This is a great way to get some fresh air, stretch your legs, and get some exercise. The same principle can be applied to phone calls. Stand up and move. I had one client who regularly clocked up 20,000 steps per day using this simple tactic.

Exercise While Your Coffee Brews

Make the most of your time by doing squats, push ups or any other quick and easy exercise while your coffee brews. This is a great way to strengthen your muscles without taking up extra time in your day.

Dance While Doing Housework

Crank up the tunes and dance while doing your housework. This is a fun way to get your heart rate up and burn some extra calories while again taking up no extra time in your day.

Park Further From Your Destination

Public car parks always fascinate me as everyone crams into the spaces closest to the destination. Do the opposite. It will be easier to park, you will build up some extra steps and if carrying shopping you have the added bonus of a weighted carry back to your vehicle.

Play With Your Family

If you have children, take advantage of their energy by playing with them. After a morning looking after my niece I’ve usually been running, walking, crawling, carrying and sitting in a multitude of different positions on the floor - all great for staying flexible and fit.

In conclusion, staying active and fit doesn't have to be a chore. By incorporating these simple tips into your daily routine, you can use your environment to stay active and healthy.
