10,000 steps per day has become the de facto physical activity target around the world. The number is arbitrary (I believe pulled from a Japanese marketing campaign in the 1960s) but I am still a big fan!
Why?
Because it’s a lot more than what most of us are currently doing and unless you have a physically demanding job you will have to be proactive in hitting the target.
How many calories will you burn when walking 10,000 steps?
The answer will depend on a number of factors including your weight, your speed and the type of terrain you cover.
Most approximations have it between 250-500 calories per day or 1750-3500 per week.
Which is pretty cool.
And can certainly help shift unwanted pounds from your body.
But weight loss isn’t the only reason for embracing a more physically active lifestyle.
Lots of daily walking (10,000+ steps) will also help increase your cardiovascular fitness, strengthen your bones, boost your energy levels, improve your mental health and reduce the risk of chronic ailments like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
It’s a goal well worth pursuing!
